오늘날 팝차트를 차지하고 있는 다양한 음악장르의 원형이 본격적으로 다듬어지기 시작했던 특정 장소와 특정 시대를 들자면 뉴욕의 1970년대를 빼놓을 수 없을 것이다. Talking Heads의 싱글 제목에서 따온 Love Goes to Buildings on Fire: Five Years in New York That Changed Music Forever라는 제목의 책은 1973년부터 1977년까지의 뉴욕 음악씬을 다루고 있다.

어떤 바를 소개하면서 기자가 Talking Heads의 Heaven을 언급하고 있다. 이 곡이 Heaven이라는 이름을 가진 한 바에 관한 곡이기 때문이다. 개인적으로 가장 맘에 드는 가사 부분은 “Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.”라는 후렴구다. 이 노래가 울려 퍼지는 바에서 칵테일을 느긋하게 한잔 즐겨도 좋을 듯.

아마도 세상에서 클래식한 렉시콘 디지털 리버브만큼 스튜디오에서 흔하게 쓰인 리버브(음향효과를 주는 이펙터)는 없을 것이다. 보통의 스튜디오는 렉시콘 224 디지털 리버브(the Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb)를 선택했고(U2의 The Unforgettable Fire와 Talking Heads의 Remain In Light에도 사용된), 결과는 굉장히 멋진 재창조였다.(이미지 출처 및 전문보기)

An amazing thing happened last week. I attended a show in Silver Spring, Maryland. The Tom Tom Club was opening for the Psychedelic Furs: two New Wave bands of the 80’s. Mainly I was going to see Tina Weymouth and Chris Franz in person, as they were two of the original members of the Talking Heads, one of my favorite bands of all time.(전체 글 보기)

Start Making Sense. A Talking Heads tribute band and arguably one of the best tribute bands I’ve ever seen. The front man, wearing a suit with the same type of haircut as David Byrne, turned in a perfect performance and even had the tics and mannerisms down pat. Even their band name is derived from Talking Heads canon, based on their famous concert film and album.

Stop Making Sense

The Daily Beast의 Ramin Setoodeh라는 칼럼니스트가 3D 콘서트 무비 Glee를 비판하면서 Stop Making Sense를 언급하였다.

The concert movie used to be a sacred art form. Jonathan Demme’s 1984 Stop Making Sense, about the Talking Heads, didn’t have much backstage footage either, but it’s often regarded as a pinnacle in the genre, because it treated its subjects with reverence. “It’s apparent that this is a rock concert film that looks and sounds like no other,” read the New York Times review by Janet Maslin. “The sound is extraordinarily clear, thanks to the pioneering use of 24-track digital recording. And the film’s visual style is as coolly iconoclastic as the Talking Heads itself. Mr. Demme has captured both the look and the spirit of this live performance with a daring and precision that match the group’s own.”

이들의 데뷔앨범이 1977년에 발매되었다는 점을 다시 상기해보자. 그렇다. 이 앨범은 이들의 데뷔앨범이 발매되기 2년전에 녹음된 것이다. 이들은 CBS와의 계약을 위해 이 데모들을 녹음했으나, 결국 계약을 따내지 못했고 Sire Records와 계약한다. 이 데모들을 들어보면 CBS가 얼마나 멍청한 짓을 했는지 잘 알 수 있을 것이다. 수록곡 중 많은 곡이 이들의 첫 두 앨범에 실렸으며, 이 데모버전들 중 일부는 Sand in the Vaseline: Popular Favorites (1992) 등을 통해 마스터링되어 공개되기도 했지만, 아직까지 공개된 적이 없는 곡들도 포함되어 있다.
