Tom Tom Club의 흥겨움에는 Talking Heads의 흥겨움과는 다른 무언가가 있다. 이것은 아마도 흥겨운 기조를 유지하면서도 뭔가 변태스러운 분위기를 풍기려는 David Byrne의 존재가 없는 대신 밝고 명랑한 Tina Weymouth 와 그 녀의 자매들이 그 자리를 메우기 때문이 아닐까 싶다. 그래서 아직도 그들의 음악은 발랄한 10대들의 댄스파티를 연상시키는 흥겨움이 있다. 그들의 2013년 유럽 투어 비디오를 모아봤다. 언제나 한국에 올는지.

The duo, husband and wife Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, announced the new mini-effort through their Facebook page, but didn’t quite deliver all of the details. They did, however, confirm that the recording will arrive September 4 digitally, and be issued on vinyl on September 11. That’s potentially it’s artwork up above.[원문보기]

현재 Tom Tom Club이 진행 중인 프로젝트는 다섯 곡이 담긴 EP를 만드는 작업이다. 우선 이 앨범에는 스페인의 일렉트로니카 그룹 the Pinker Tones의 “Love Tape” 리메이크가 포함될 예정이다.
As with the Tom Tom Club’s previous five projects, a rotating cast of musicians are featured. Frantz and Weymouth told Billboard.com that the EP will include a remake of “Love Tape” by the Pinker Tones, the Spanish electronica group. “It’s been very exciting,” Frantz said. “We recorded it with the touring band we have, and it sounds really great.”(더 자세한 소식 보기)
RIP – James Rizzi
James Rizzi 라는 아티스트가 현지 시각으로 12월 26일 유명을 달리했다. 향년 61세. 그는 Tom Tom Club의 앨범 커버를 그린 화가다. 이 커버가 큰 인기를 얻었기 때문에 Chris와 Tina는 James가 첫 싱글 Genius of Love의 뮤직비디오의 작업에도 참여해줄 것을 요청하기도 했다.

Tom Tom Club, 결성 30주년 기념 앨범 낼까?
Tom Tom Club 이 그룹결성 30주년을 기념하여 새 음악으로 앨범을 내는 것을 고려중이라는 보도다. 그들이 마지막으로 앨범을 낸 것은 11년 전이다. 프란츠는 “더 이상 정규 앨범을 내는 것은 고려치 않고 있다. 싱글이나 EP 정도로 생각하고 있는데, 소리가 괜찮은 EP들을 충분히 갖게 되면 함께 모아 앨범을 낼 수도 있다. 오늘날 대부분의 사람들은 그저 좋은 음악을 듣는 것에만 관심있는 것 같다.”라고 이야기했다.

이 사진은 뉴요커 로커의 커버를 위해 찍은 거예요. 그때는 힙합 씬과 다운타운 씬 사이에 수많은 상호수분작용이 시작되고 있었죠. Tina Weymouth와 Chris Frantz의 새 밴드 Tom Tom Club는 막 그들의 첫 앨범을 내놓았는데, 이 앨범에는 랩과 힙합 비트가 녹아들어가 있었어요. The flip side and the legacy are so much brighter. On stage, Tina Weymouth sparkles with glowing youth. Chris Frantz is the happiest dude on the planet, owner of a perma-smile that is nothing short of contagious. And as a band Tom Tom Club perform in a groove that is eminently danceable – any attempt not to would be pure folly. Though playing tunes from two decades before last, Tom Tom Club perform as if they are fresh cuts – and they could be. ‘L’Elephant’ is perky quirk-pop, ‘The Man With The Four Way Hips’ is bouncy dub-reggae, ‘Disco Lolita’ is disco-punk (which they dedicate to Debbie Harry) and ‘Dark Sneak Love’ is synthy-electro – and the synths did squelch!

Tom Tom Club을 시작했을 때 이미 당신 둘과 David Byrne 사이에는 갈등이 있었는데, 그럼에도 Talking Heads가 10년이나 비틀거리면서도 지속되었습니다. TTC의 초기 싱글들의 상업적 성공이 TH를 지속시켰다고 생각하세요?
There were already tensions between you two and David Byrne when Tom Tom Club started, and yet Talking Heads still managed to stumble on for another decade. Do you think the commercial success of those early Tom Tom Club singles helped prolong the Heads?
CF : 네. 정말 그렇습니다. And I think the fact that we were selling tons of record on our first album, and getting lots of airplay, and having people sample our songs – that made David think, ‘Oh, maybe these people are still of value to me.’ Ha! But bless David’s heart, I don’t really want to disparage him because the stuff that we did together was so remarkable and outstanding… but, you know, nobody’s perfect.
