David Byrne의 신작 How Music Works에 관한 인터뷰 중에서

개인적으로 저는 책에서의 보다 흥미로운 부분은 내가 책을 읽기 전에는 전혀 전체적으로 이해하지 못한 부분인 당신의 토킹헤즈와의 경험과 당신의 토킹헤즈와의 작곡과 관련되어 있습니다. 특히 Remain in Light이 집단적인 즉흥연주의 결과였다는 것 말이에요.

우리는 Fear of Music에서 일부 그런 시도를 했었어요. 즉흥적으로 작업한 곡이 몇 개 있죠. 그리고 이런 경험이 “와~ 썩 훌륭하네.”라고 말할 정도로 자신감을 가졌죠. 그리고 the Bush of Ghosts 레코드에서는 모든 작업이 스튜디오에서 즉흥적인 것들에서 비롯되었습니다. 그리고 우리는 이것들이 전혀 다른 음악들로 귀결되었고 약간은 바보 같다고 느꼈습니다. 그러나 이는 모든 이들이 개입하는 한 방법이 될 수 있었죠. 모든 밴드들이 해볼 만한 재밌는 일이이에요. 그래서 우리는 그 방법으로 나아갔고 최소한 두어 장의 앨범에서 그렇게 시도했죠. 그리고 대부분 제대로 됐어요. [웃음] 놀랍지도 않지만 코드 변화는 많지 않았어요. 대부분 재밍(jamming)이었기 때문이고, 그래서 두 개나 세 개 정도의 코드 정도로 끝났죠. 그러나 그루브나 질감은 만약 기타 하나로 홀로 앉아 있었더라면 결코 만나지 못할 그런 것들로 완성되었습니다. 세 개내지는 네 개의 파트가 함께 포개어지는 것이죠. 각각의 파트는 퍼즐 한 조각 같고, 질감과 그루브가 함께 섞입니다.

In its first concert ever Saturday night at the State Theatre in Minneapolis, the 12-piece David Byrne and St. Vincent group sounded like, well, a two-weekend affair. They seemed hot to trot, full of cool ideas and nervy enthusiasm (the album was released only five days earlier) as well as some odd ideas and heady intentions that were not well thought out. In short, it was an encouraging collaboration that will be more rewarding a few weeks and several performances down the road.[전문 보기]

Byrne, who believes he has a mild “form of Asberger’s syndrome,” is better behind the guitar than the word processor. Still, this book is lit up by his global curiosity. It is fun learning, for instance, that Byrne’s inspiration for that gigantic white suit came from traditional Japanese Noh theater with its sense that everything on stage needs to be bigger.

서문에서, 번은 독자들이 챕터들을 순서대로 읽는 것에 구애받지 않고 자유롭게 스킵할 것을 권유한다. 그는 절대로 선형의 인간이 아니고, 이 책은 선형의 책이 아니다. “어떻게 음악이 작동하는가”는 그 자체로 하나의 것이 되는, 어떻게 음악이 고안되며, 표현되며, 받아들여지는가에 대한 에세이들의 모음이다. 책은 형식, 기능, 창조성, 기술, 공연, 건축, 비즈니스를 다루고 있다. “어떻게 음악이 작동하는가”는 음악분야에서 200레벨 코스의 훌륭한 대학교재로 쓰일 만 하다.
In his preface, Byrne suggests that readers can skip around rather than read the chapters in order. He’s never been a linear kind of a guy, and this is not a linear kind of book. “How Music Works” is a collection of essays, each of which could stand alone, about how music is conceived, presented and received. It deals with form, function, creativity, technology, performing, architecture, business. “How Music Works” would be an excellent college textbook for a 200-level course in a music department.[출처]

‘Who’ Are ‘Downtown Rockers’?

As a long-time fan of one of the greatest rock bands ‘Talking Heads’, it’s good to see that the members of the band are still working hard in the music business in spite of their breakup. Band’s ex-frontman David Byrne released a new single ‘Who’ with the help of a famous female artist ‘St. Vincent’, and Tom Tom Club, a kind of side project of Talking Heads and whose members are Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, started to sell their new EP ‘Downtown Rockers’ online. What really amazed me is that the songs of David Byrne and Tom Tom Club are not just old-fashioned songs that appeal to ’80s rock-n-roll fans and they are rather contemporary and state-of-art. This is partly because they are great musicians and so have kept up with the pop music trends, and partly because current music styles, such as danceable funky beats and exotic melodies, are based upon the great funky new wave band ‘Talking Heads’. That’s why they are not falling behind younger musicians. One of my favorite singes in ‘Downtown Rockers’ so far is ‘Sweets to the sweet’, which has a sophisticated but catchy melody.

On June 14 American singer-songwriter St. Vincent and Talking Heads lead singer David Byrne announced details of their upcoming collaboration album, Love This Giant. The pair also announced they will be touring together this fall in support of the album, which is set to be released September 11, 2012 via 4AD/Todo Mundo.[보다 자세한 소식 보기]

Jerry Harrison의 The Red and The Black 을 아이튠즈에서 구입한 김에 David Byrne이 Brian Eno와 함께 작업한 Everything That Happens Will Happen Today 을 구입하기로 함. 그래서 정규앨범과 EP를 함께 샀다. 사놓고서 보니 David Byrne의 솔로앨범 중 구입하지 않은 것이 몇 개 있다는 것을 발견했다. 이것도 마저 질러버릴까 생각했지만 욕심이란 생각이 들어 포기. 우선 있는 앨범들을 착실히 들은 후 마음이 내키면 그때 사기로 마음을 고쳐먹었다. 듣지도 않을 것들 사놓고 쟁여놓는 것도 다 쓸데없는 짓이니까.

어제 5월 14일이(미국 시간으로는 현재까지 오늘) David Byrne의 생일이로군요. 그것도 60살이 되는 생일이라고 합니다. 한국식의 회갑은 아닙니다만 어쨌든 이제 Byrne 옹도 할아버지 소리를 들으실 나이가 되신 듯 합니다. 하지만 나이가 들수록 더 멋져지시는 모습에 뭐 나이라는 것은 그냥 숫자일 뿐이라는 어떤 광고에 딱 어울리시는 분이 아닌가 싶네요. 생일 축하해요 Byrne옹~

“아버지를 위한 노래” 후기

영화 전체적으로는 그다지 후한 점수를 주고 싶지 않은 작품이다.

30년간 아버지를 만나지 않았고 자신의 노래 때문에 자살한 이들 때문에 더 이상 노래를 부르지 않은 흘러간 팝스타 셰이언이 아버지의 죽음에 즈음하여 그의 임종을 목격하고, 그가 생전에 집요하게 찾아 헤매던 한 나치 군인을 찾아 나선다는, 그럼으로써 결국 일종의 영혼의 치유를 받는다는 흔하고 상투적인 가족영화, 로드무비 스타일이다.

중간 중간에 극 전개와 별로 관련 없는 캐릭터들이 등장하여 잔재미를 주는데, 이런 캐릭터들은 바로 영화의 원제 This must be the place와 같은 이름의 곡을 만들었고, 음악감독과 카메오를 맡은 David Byrne의 영화 True Stories에서 등장하는 괴상한한 캐릭터들을 흉내 낸 게 아닌가 하는 생각이 들 정도로 상투적인 스토리와는 어울리지 않았다.

아버지가 그토록 찾아 헤매던 그 나치군인을 찾아내어 그를 통해 왜 아버지가 그토록 그를 찾아 헤맸는지에 대한 이야기를 듣는 장면과 (여기에서 그 늙은 나치군인이 보여준 연기는 맘에 들었다) 연출에서 오버한 감이 보이지만 그에게서 셰이언만의 복수를 하는 장면은 그래도 볼만 했다. 하지만 말미에서는 공항장면에서 다시 상투성을 재연한다.

p.s. 1. Talking Heads의 팬으로서는 당연히 극의 백미는 This must be the place를 부르는 David Byrne 의 막간 공연.

p.s. 2. 극중 David Byrne과 셰이언이 대화를 나누는 장소는 David Byrne이 실제로 그의 예술품으로 만든 연주가 가능한 빌딩.

p.s. 3. 셰이언의 분장은 많이들 아시겠지만 The Cure의 Robert Smith를 흉내 낸 것.

p.s. 4. 국내 출시명 “아버지를 위한 노래”는 정말 재앙이다. 아버지를 위한 여정도 아니었고, 셰이언은 노래를 부르지도 않는다.

p.s. 5. 영화를 상영하는 시네큐브 홈페이지에는 Talking Heads가 “1981년 해체한 것”으로 나온다. 실제로는 1991년.
